What Types of Safes Are There?

Last updated: 3.02pm, Tuesday 18th September 2018 by

Finding the safe that’s right for you is like buying a new car or booking a holiday, everyone’s needs are different. With the wide range of choices available it can be difficult to know which safe will provide the correct storage for your valuables. But before you start to panic, let’s take a look at some of the most common kinds of safes and when they will be the most suitable.

Freestanding safe

Free Standing Safes

Free standing safes are the most popular kinds of safes among commercial and domestic clients. These safes are bolted down through the base (into a concrete floor or wooden floor joist) or through the rear (into a solid wall behind) to ensure the necessary security. They are available in a huge range of sizes from small safes suitable for the home or office right up to large commercial safes used in banks and large retail outlets.

Cupboard Safe

Cupboard Safes

Cupboard safes are smaller than freestanding safes and, as the name suggests, are designed to be stored within cupboards or under the stairs. While cupboard safes provide an extra level of security for your valuables, they are not usually covered by insurance companies. You will have peace of mind that should someone gain access to your property, it will take them much longer to find and access your valuables. During this extra time, someone may be able to raise the alarm that someone is in your property giving the intruder less time to escape.

Deposit Safe

Deposit Safes

Deposit safes are only used for commercial use. These kinds of safes have different ways to deposit contents into the safe without the need to open the safe itself. Deposit options range from envelope slots to rotunda deposits and drawer traps. The deposit option you choose will depend upon what you plan on storing/depositing in it. Deposit safes can also often be made bespoke to each client with extra shelves and lockable compartments.

Underfloor safe

Underfloor Safes

Underfloor safes conjure up images of spy and gangster films but in reality, they are not as convenient to use as a freestanding safe. Concreted into a hole in the ground, they can also be difficult to fit. However; once fit, they can be seen as more secure than other kinds of safes as only the door is open to attack. Before purchasing an underfloor safe, be sure to check that your premises doesn’t suffer from a damp problem as this will affect the structure of the safe over time.

Wall Safes

You will have seen wall safes in a number of your favourite TV programmes. These kinds of safes are built into a brick or concrete wall allowing them to be hidden by pictures or paintings hung in front. While you may be tempted having seen your favourite character using theirs, it can be a big job to have a wall safe installed. You need to choose a thick wall and it must not be accessible from the outside. Often you will have to get builders to cut the wall ready for the safe to be installed.
