Retail Security – Tell-Tale Signs of a Shoplifter
Last updated: 7.15pm, Monday 19th November 2018
Each year, crime costs the retail industry around £600m and this figure is on the increase. Customer theft accounts for 83% of the 750,144 total number of incidents highlighting a need for retailers to put systems in place to catch shoplifters. So what can be done?
Can You Stop a Shoplifter?
One of Tyneside’s top security guards recently gave his advice on how he spots thieves and potential thieves in House of Fraser at the Metro Centre in Gateshead; a role which recently won him a Long Term Contribution award at the North East Retail Crime Awards.
Barry Jago from Washington, Tyne and Wear believes that many shoplifters display similar body language when they are planning to, or in the process of, shoplifting. The four main tell-tales signs are:
- Talking to themselves
- Playing with their hair
- Tapping on the counter
Of those four, Jago says that the main tell-tale sign is when shoplifters talk to themselves. A defence mechanism which is brought on by nervous adrenalin associated with doing something wrong.
Protecting Your Assets
Jago and his security team at House of Fraser spend much of their time and efforts on preventing theft and creating a reputation for the store which deters shoplifters from entering, rather than arresting shoplifters.
This approach keeps the long term assets of the company in mind as well as the resources of local police. By building up that reputation of being a secure place to shop and a difficult place to steal from, House of Fraser will see a much lower figure lost to crime than other retail outlets who don’t focus their efforts on reducing theft by customers.
Having security guards patrolling your shop and monitoring CCTV is not the only way to prevent theft. Intelligent till solutions, deposit safes and access control can all provide benefits in preventing crime against your business. In particular, deposit safes and intelligent till solutions allow the secure and efficient storage of cash within the store giving staff more time to serve customers which ensures that there are no large queues as large queues provide the ideal cover for a shoplifter to evade attention.
