With the stresses of everyday life it can be easy to forget to secure your home from potential burglars. Even small things can make it that bit harder for a burglar to target your home so here of five easy steps you can take.
It may sound obvious to lock your doors in order to stop thieves easily entering your home but if you enter with your hands full of shopping or get distracted before you’ve had a chance to lock the door behind you, the door can remain unlocked for anyone to enter. When you enter and leave the house double check that the external doors in your house are locked.
Also, don’t forget to store the keys out of sight, particularly from the letter box where thieves can retrieve them.
Windows can be a particularly easy entry point for a potential burglar, especially when they are left open or unlocked over the warmer months. Resist the urge to leave windows open to air your house while you’re out and if they’re closed, make sure they are locked too.
Lighting can be a clear indicator to thieves that a home is occupied. If you’re popping out of the house for the evening or going away on holiday, light timers can give the impression that someone is home even when they’re not.
Outdoor sensor lighting can also be great for putting off potential thieves. As soon as movement is sensed around the perimeter of your home, a light will shine of the cause of the movement. Not only will this be useful to you if you are home but it can also alert your neighbours or passers-by too.
A large number of homeowners choose to protect their home with a security alarm which is great but what they don’t think to do is to regularly change the code. Similar to account passwords, it is always recommended to change the code on your alarm on a regular basis in order to gain the maximum benefit and protection from them.
In the event that an intruder does gain entry to your home, it is vital that you store the things most valuable to you in a secure home safe. Whether you use it to store jewellery, important documents, family heirlooms, electrical gadgets or cash, a safe provides that extra layer of protection. If your safe is professionally bolted down to the floor or to a wall, the thieves won’t be able to remove it and if, like most burglaries, the aim is to get in and out as quick as possible, they won’t be able to get in to your secure safe.
