Lots of customers approach us asking the question; how do I make sure that my business is protected as best it can be? There are lots of security solutions on the market which can make it confusing for business owners so today we’re going to run through six steps you can take to ensure that your assets are protected from burglary and fire.

Perimeter Protection

Securing the perimeter of your business premises is the first step to ensuring that only authorised personnel can get in. Security gates come in two main styles, swing or sliding, and the option you choose will depend on the amount of space available. Automated security gates take the hassle away from opening and closing the gates manually and can also allow you to monitor who goes in and out.

Access Control

The doors to your business can be secured using a range of different access control solutions. If you have a small workforce, key locks or mechanical door locks could be the ideal solution whereas for larger workforces where you need to allow access for higher volumes of people, electronic proximity readers or even biometric locks could be a better solution for you. Before you set about having an access control system fitted, make sure you take into consideration how and where it will be used as this will help you decide which solution is right for you.

CCTV

If the worst does happen and someone gains entry to your business premises, CCTV is one of the most useful tools you can have. It allows you to check back and see who has been in the building and identify any unauthorised persons. CCTV can also work as a visual deterrent to stop thieves attempting to gain access to your property. There are a number of different types of CCTV systems ranging from highly sophisticated colour DVRs (digital video recorders) to simple cameras filming in black and white and viewed though a TV monitor. It is usually advisable to position cameras at access points and around the perimeter of your building as well as within any restricted areas.

Asset Protection

Inside your business, you will no doubt have valuable items and cash that will need securing. A graded safe can provide the necessary protection for these precious items. Graded safes come in a variety of sizes and shapes with different locking options so it can sometimes seem daunting to find the one you need. Before purchasing a safe, make sure you establish your requirements and speak to an advisor who can suggest the right safe for your needs.

Fire Alarms & Protection

If a fire starts within your business premises, you need to be sure that it is detected in the quickest possible time in order to minimise the damage. According to official government guidelines, all businesses should have a fire detection and warning system. You must also ensure that the alarms are regularly checked to see that they are still in good working order. To protect your assets in the event of a fire, it is advisable to store valuable items and important documents in a fire resistant cabinet or safe which will provide some fire protection (usually around 30 minutes to an hour).

Security Response

As the saying goes, “fail to prepare and prepare to fail”. If you run your business in denial thinking that burglary or fire will never happen to you, you will be dangerously unprepared should the worst happen. It is always advisable to have a response plan in place and to make sure all staff are aware of it. You can also link up fire and burglar alarms to local authorities to notify them of a security breech or fire.
